HELEN SMITH
Helen Smith was born in Wiradjuri country (Cooma), New South Wales and lives and works on unceded Gadigal land.
Her practice is influenced by a reductionist viewpoint with simplicity of form and geometric abstraction generally contributing to the outcome. Oil on canvas paintings, derived from an interest in physics and cultural systems form the basis for her enquiry and she has also collaborated with her partner, Jeremy kirwan-Ward, on a number of large scale wallworks and installations in Australia and Berlin.
In 2024 she was awarded a Master of Fine Art, through the Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney where she now works as a Casual Academic and recent exhibitions of note include New Contemporaries at Sydney College of the Arts, Nightfill at PS Projectspace, Amsterdam, In-Formalism Casula Powerhouse Project Sydney (curated by Andrew Leslie), Blue Highway at Gallery 9, Sydney and Australian Centre for Concret Art @ FABRIKCulture, Hegenheim, France. She has participated in research Residencies in Auckland (Fauvette Loureiro Travel Scholarship), at Point B Residency in New York and at the Institut Fur Alles Mogliche in Berlin. She is a current member of the ARI, Australian Centre for Concrete Art (AC4CA) and is represented by Gallery9 in Sydney.
